Heisman finalists

The following area athletes are finalists in the state's High School Heisman in Illinois that will be announced Saturday: Erin Poss, Antioch; Andrew Scott, Aurora Central; Margaret Gannon, Burlington Central; Kyle Freischlag, Downers South; Toni Kokenis, Hinsdale Central; Will Cronin, Immaculate Conception; Timothy Johnson, St. Charles; Bradley Klune, St. Viator; Lena Brottman, Fremd.

Perez and Garoppolo

Randy Taylor, a former college recruiting coordinator who evaluates talent for the Chicago-based National Collegiate Scouting Association, picked Matt Perez of Maine South as the No. 1 football player in the area and Jimmy Garoppolo of Rolling Meadows as the No. 1 quarterback. Taylor said Garoppolo rates ahead in his view "because he is a great athlete and is such a terrific all-around player. He has moxie. He also plays safety and punts."

Best freshman?

Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow is touting Aaron Bailey as perhaps the best freshman in the state.
